Fischer custom-made ski

My expedition skis are a special make-up of the Fischer Europa 99 Tour. They differ from the standard model as follows:

  • A unique and unbreakable fiberglass core
  • Lightweight poplar wood
  • Additional laminate reinforcements on head and tail of ski
  • Reinforcement of the cover sheet through optimized material (i.e. special glue and surface compound)
  • Specific climbing heel = Mountain Crown, ca. 100cm in length, ensuring a better push in all temperature ranges and snow conditions

These modifications make this ski very stable and yet very light – essential qualities when travelling long distances through the challenging northern Arctic terrain or navigating safely, efficiently and economically over deep snow ridges and hard glacial ice in Greenland, Spitsbergen or Lapland.

The ski comes in three different variations, differing in the base coat:

  • Wax base coating without fish scales: to use in expeditions requiring removable climbing skins for downhill skiing, kiting long distances or in mountain terrain.
  • Extra long fish scales: ideal for Spitsbergen, Greenland, Scandinavia, Canada and Antarctica. Sometimes fish scales are just what it takes to move forward pulling a certain sledge weight or moving on a specific angle of terrain. They are also adequate for short downhill distances without having to put on and take off climbing skins.
  • Extra long fish scales and a special make-up for shortening skins: this ski is an efficient special make-up for greater Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. There is a transition phase while towing a specific sledge weight or climbing up a gradual incline (i.e. reaching the top of an ice sheet); the skins cause resistance but at the same time it is too early to remove the skins. Therefore, I’ve invented a device for shortening skins – it maintains the supporting effect of the skins in the middle area of the ski but reduces resistance on the tip of the ski.

Bindings

We can recommend an appropriate binding depending on your boot.

Climbing skins

The most positive experience I’ve had has been with Montana’s nylon skins. Nylon provides the best uphill grip and lasts longer than mohair.
