«An Expedition just like back in the day»

Coast to Coast 2018

(...) 34 days after leaving the Scottish coast, Skipper Wolf dropped us off at the coast of Greenland where we proceeded to haul all of our material to the Inland Ice - a strenuous and rather monotonous to and fro. However, as we had meanwhile learnt, by fair means not only meant travelling slowly but also autonomously. Neither airline departure times nor bidding for available helicopter landings or bus timetables defined our actions - only our rhythm called our tune. This is how expeditions back in the day must have been!

The weather played a key role once we were out on the ice. We seemed to be in the middle of one of the coldest summers ever, even for Greenlands standards and in the first two weeks there was hardly any wind. We crept across the ice at a snail's pace on our skis, dragging our sledges behind us. It was hard not to lose our motivation. At the same time, we found out that our skipper had been delayed due to storms and an injury of one of the team members and we now worried if they would make it to the East Coast on time. But then came the day when we were able to ride our kites a full 125 km across the ice. Nothing but ice and snow while we flew by at high speed - what an amazing feeling. The tables had turned, we were making progress, we found a way off of the glacier onto the coast and finally the Santa Maria arrived almost precisely on the day we finished our food supplies.

Coast to Coast 2018 was funded by Redbull, Deutsche Bank and BMW. As usual, I was also supported by my own personal sponsors; Real Turmat, Lowa, Leki, Norrona, Fischer and Swarovski Optik.
