Leather and Aluminium as opposed to plastic

Traditional ski poles are useless in the high arctic regions and cause unnecessary risk. They cannot take the wear and tear caused by the heavy weight of the sledge and the low temperatures – they will eventually break. Together with the manufacturer Leki, I’ve developed an arctic pole made to hold out in harsh conditions. The pole comes in two lengths: 140cm and 145cm. A foam grip with a larger diameter makes the pole much easier to hold and at the same time ensures lower heat loss. A smaller diameter makes it more strenuous to hold the pole and requires more pressure. A decrease in blood circulation results in cold hands.

The pole loops are long enough to fit thick gloves and ensure «arctic pole-holding». In cold regions the hand just passes through the pole loops, the loops are not wound around the wrist (see fig.) This way the blood can circulate freely to the joints and fingers; another important factor preventing cold hands and frostbite on the fingers.

While developing the pole baskets, I resorted to the expertise of the Swiss army; theirs are made out of a leather loop and an aluminum ring, therefore making them sturdier than plastic and easier to repair in case of an emergency.
